Purpose of the Frank Sydenham Legacy

Frank Sydenham was one of the earliest people to achieve a masters in horticulture.  He was a market gardener who left Tauranga his legacy of both a botanical park, and scholarship opportunities for students hailing from the Bay of Plenty undertaking postgraduate studies in the areas he was most passionate about.

Specifically, the Frank Sydenham Trust Scholarship 1978 provides discretionary annual post graduate horticulture, agriculture or forestry scholarships to former students from schools within the statutory boundary of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.



Funding Application Guidelines

  • Applications are open from 15th November 2019 - 15th December 2019.
  • Scholarships will be valued at $10,000.00+
  • Applications must be completed via the online application form


Applicants must:

  • ​Be past pupils of Colleges/Secondary or District Schools in the Bay of Plenty Region *see map above or here
  • Already hold a bachelors degree in horticulture, agriculture, or forestry (or related subjects) from a university in New Zealand, Canada or Australia

  • Be pursuing a Post Graduate qualification in horticulture, agriculture or forestry or related subjects.

  • Be under 40 years of age

  • Scholarships may be paid for New Zealand based or overseas based post graduate study BUT scholars must provide an undertaking in good faith that:  

For study overseas: 

  • ​Will return to New Zealand five years after the date the scholarship was awarded
  • Shall be residing permanently in New Zealand for at least five years thereafter.
  • Except for short periods of travel (up to three months) in-between.

For study in New Zealand:

  • ​Will continue to reside permanently in New Zealand for five years after the completion of the scholarship.

  • Except for short periods of travel (up to three months) in-between. 

Scholarships will be considered on the basis of good scholastic or exam qualifications and the need for financial assistance.



Annual Report - online E-report

We would like to receive a more formal update in regards to your work.  This will include the completion of a short online format report.  We will contact the successful applicant(s) approximately one year after the scholarship was awarded.


We are unable to provide detailed feedback on unsuccessful applications. Please note the decision of the Trustee is final and not subject to any appeals process.
